Have you ever wondered what is the most talked about topic on Twitter? A recent study found the answer is “beer” and “church”. Yes, you heard me correctly.  The study by Floatingsheep.org also discovered there is a distinct regional divide in “tweets” as well.  According to the group, “church” tweets were most common in the Southeast United States, while tweets about “beer” were most prevalent in the Northeast.  Here is a map breakdown of how the rest of the country fared.

The results of this study had me thinking about social media as it pertains to the church.  My church has a Facebook page.  I am seeing more religious organizations turning to social media to spread the gospel.  However, I still run into people who think Facebook or any social media is the “devil.” Granted there are some things happening on social media that may cause Christ to even blush.  But, I think this study supports the claim there is an opportunity to share bibilical truths to the masses.  If “church” is already a seemingly popular topic what is preventing your congregation from joining twitterverse.

All too often the church leaves “secular” things for the “world” but does not look at those things as a way to further a good cause.  Even though the study highlights “church” tweets just to the Southeastern part of the country I still believe if anything creates enough buzz it can transcend a region.  We can see that example in Jesus’ ministry while here on the earth.

So get to tweeting, remember the hashtag #church and watch the flock come in.  After all,  the great commission is to go unto all the world…even social media.
